My Husband & I are coaching Ella's fast pitch softball team this year - The Rockstar's. They are 2-3rd grade girls (Ella is only a 1st grader but they didn't have enough kids in her level so moved her up.)
We didn't go into the year planning on being coaches but they had so many girls sign up, they wanted to form another team to keep the numbers down. I must have gone back and forth all day about it. We do have 2 other kids, one of whom cannot be left by himself so babysitting could become an issue. We drive 2 hours north every weekend to our cabin, so we didn't want to commit if that would affect cabin time. It is a pretty big commitment to make. BUT, we did want to have those precious memories of being Ella's coaches. She was begging me to coach from the get go. (I played growing up and I can't remember a summer without playing softball and now I finally have a daughter that wants to play! My oldest cried when she got hit in the shoulder with a tennis ball, she's a dancer not an athlete and that's OK too...) I have been a member on our work co-ed team but decided this year that I can only do one or the other. Kid team here I come, beer league - it's been real.
I never imagined I would love doing this as much as I do. The girls are so sweet and usually give 100% (except the one who draws in the sand ha, ha!) We googled all sorts of drills to do and make this really fun for the girls. I brought freezies and spray bottles to the game a couple weeks ago when it was 103 out to keep the girls cool (so not the norm for MN weather). I WAS NOT GOING TO BE A CRAPPY COACH. These girls would LOVE playing and WANT to come back and play next year. I also recruited my Brother In Law and his sweet Girlfriend to help out. They kids LOVE them too. I was actually bummed when I found out there is no fall ball for these kids. What will we ever do with our time? This takes 2-3 nights a week away from being home but it's so worth it. My daughter loves it and that's all that matters. Oh, for our end of the year party...we are going to play 1 final game: Kids vs. Parents. I. Cannot. Wait.
Anyways, my point of this post was this...Tonight we have another game if the rain will hold out. This morning I went into Ella's room to wake her up wake and find her like this:
She's all dressed and ready to go for tonight's game. I love her.
